Immediate Dentures for Insertion Following Removal of Your Teeth
What Is an Immediate Denture?
Immediate dentures are inserted on the same day as the removal of your natural teeth. These dentures can be either complete or partial.

What Are the Advantages of an Immediate Denture?
Immediate dentures offer several key advantages, primarily allowing patients to avoid the inconvenience and embarrassment of being without teeth in social or professional settings. By taking impressions before tooth extraction, these dentures can closely replicate the natural shape, color, and alignment of your existing teeth, ensuring a more seamless transition. Once the extractions are completed, the dentures are placed right away, providing a protective barrier for the healing tissues and helping to reduce bleeding—similar to the function of a Band-Aid. Another significant benefit is that they enable patients to maintain their normal speech patterns from the start, preventing the adjustment period of going without teeth while waiting for dentures to be fabricated. This approach ensures greater comfort, confidence, and functionality throughout the healing process.
What to Expect
Studies have demonstrated that even the best-fitting dentures can only restore approximately 20% to 25% of the chewing ability that natural teeth provide. This limitation is due to the fact that dentures do not have the same anchoring as natural teeth, which are firmly rooted in the jawbone. Additionally, because the shape of the palate and the size of the underlying bone structure vary from one individual to another, the level of denture stability can differ significantly from person to person. Some individuals may experience a more secure fit, while others might require adjustments or adhesives to improve retention and comfort. Proper care, routine relines, and implant-supported options can help enhance the functionality and overall experience of wearing dentures.
Following extractions, the bone will shrink and resorb rapidly for about eight months. During this time, temporary liners are needed to adjust for bone loss and ensure a secure fit for your dentures. Breton Denture Centre (2010) offers these adjustments at no additional charge for the first three months after extractions.

Cleansing Instructions
For best results, soak your dentures every day in a denture bath filled with water and half a tablet of a gentle denture cleanser like Polident. When brushing, focus only on the outer surface to avoid damaging the delicate inner liner. Keep in mind that using a stronger cleaning solution for an extended period can cause the liner to dry out rapidly. Since this liner is designed to be a temporary solution, it typically lasts around two months before needing replacement. Regular care will help maintain its condition and ensure your dentures remain comfortable to wear.
Relines – 9 Months Later
After the essential nine-month healing period, patients will need a permanent reline to ensure their dentures fit properly. This adjustment, often referred to as a refitting, is necessary because the mouth undergoes natural changes due to bone loss after tooth extraction. To complete this process, a new impression of your gums will be taken early in the morning, allowing for precise adjustments. By the end of the day, your relined denture will be ready, providing a more secure and comfortable fit. Regular relining is important to maintain optimal function and comfort over time.
